Franprix: Casino Group's Convenience Banner in the Greater Paris Area

Founded in 1958, Franprix is 100% owned by the Casino Group and operates primarily in the Paris–Île-de-France region. 893 stores are supplied with dry goods and liquids from three warehouses located in Seine-et-Marne, Val-de-Marne, and Val-d'Oise. Every day, 350 of these stores are delivered — representing 250 routes carried out by 120 drivers.

A demanding pace that required a flawless logistics organization, fully aligned with the operational constraints of each point of sale.

The Challenge: Replacing Human Expertise with a Reliable Decision-Making Tool

Each driver handles 2 to 3 delivery routes, each grouping several orders from different stores. A real puzzle for the "route planners" who had to — based on each store's constraints (order volumes, opening hours, accessibility, geographic location) — sequence order preparation and consolidate loads on the dispatch docks.

Until then, this operation relied entirely on the planners' personal knowledge, accumulated over the years. A fragile dependency: non-scalable and incompatible with the development priorities set by the Logistics Division.

  • 🧠 Dependency on individual planner knowledge: route quality depended on the unformalized expertise of a few key people, with no structuring tool and no decision traceability.
  • 🏪 Multiple and variable constraints per store: opening hours, accessibility conditions (narrow streets, pedestrian zones in Greater Paris), variable volumes depending on orders — impossible to integrate manually at this scale.
  • 📦 Non-optimized vehicle fill rates: without a calculation tool, vehicle loading based on actual order volumes was not optimized, generating under-loaded routes or requiring last-minute adjustments.
  • Difficulty maintaining consistent delivery times: without route optimization, respecting each store's delivery time slots required constant effort from drivers.
95%
TourSolver Recommendations Validated Without Modification

The proof of Nomadia TourSolver's algorithmic accuracy: Franprix route planners and operations teams validate 95% of automatically proposed routes without changes. Only last-minute orders and emergency situations require manual intervention.

We chose Nomadia's TourSolver tool for its ability to calculate distances and vehicle fill rates based on orders, which results in mileage optimization, time savings for drivers, and transport cost optimization.

TourSolver: From Decision-Support Tool to Integrated Operational Platform

Franprix used Nomadia TourSolver in two stages: first as a decision-support tool within logistics master planning, then in daily operational use. The solution was integrated with Franprix's information system to automatically retrieve mission orders and automate route optimization.

📐
Automatic Calculation of Optimal Routes

Automated route plan generation integrating distances, vehicle fill rates, and the specific constraints of each store.

📦
Vehicle Fill Rate Optimization

Precise load calculation based on actual order volumes, eliminating under-utilized routes and reducing the number of vehicles required.

🏪
Store Constraint Compliance

Integration of opening hours, access conditions specific to each delivery point, and preferred time slots for improved schedule reliability.

🔗
Integration with the Franprix IT System

Automatic retrieval of mission orders from the information system, with no manual re-entry and real-time synchronization.

🎛️
Manual Exception Management

Operations teams retain control over last-minute orders and emergencies, with TourSolver automatically handling 95% of standard cases.

📋
Decision Support for Logistics Master Plans

Used upstream as a strategic tool to design and validate logistics master plans before operational deployment.

The mobile solution we tested very quickly became indispensable! It enables us to work on several key development priorities we had set ourselves, namely optimizing team efficiency and improving service quality for our clients.

The Benefits Experienced by Franprix

  1. Measurable Mileage Optimization Across 250 Daily Routes

By automatically calculating optimal distances and factoring in traffic and Greater Paris geography, TourSolver reduces the kilometers traveled by 120 drivers each day. A saving that translates directly into fuel, vehicle wear, and transport costs.

  2. Optimized Vehicle Fill Rate

TourSolver's ability to calculate fill rates based on actual orders eliminates under-loaded routes and last-minute dock adjustments. Every truck departs with the right load, with no wasted capacity.

  3. 95% of Routes Automated Without Human Intervention

Trust in the algorithms is such that operations teams validate 95% of recommendations without modification. Route planners now focus on managing exceptions (urgent orders, store troubleshooting) rather than manually building every route.

  4. Improved Delivery Schedule Reliability

By integrating each store's opening hours and access conditions, TourSolver guarantees respected delivery time slots. Stores can organize accordingly, improving perceived service quality at the point of sale.

  5. Time Savings and Improved Service Quality

Less time building routes, fewer errors, fewer last-minute adjustments: the Logistics Division teams have regained time to focus on continuous process improvement and store relations.

An Essential Tool for Urban Food Distribution Logistics

For a logistics director or transport manager in grocery retail, route optimization in dense urban environments is not a secondary matter. It is a direct lever on delivery profitability, in-store service quality, and overall supply chain performance.

💶
Transport Cost Reduction

Mileage optimization, better vehicle fill rates: a direct and measurable impact on cost per delivery.

🏪
In-Store Service Quality

Delivery time slots met, stores supplied on time: a key factor in store team satisfaction.

Logistics Team Efficiency

95% of routes automated frees route planners for higher-value tasks than manually building schedules.
