Field operations management: query your activity in natural language

CTO, Nomadia
A key client calls to complain. The manager has no immediate visibility: they hang up, phone someone who will go and check, and call back two hours later. Smart Control, a Field Service Management AI module included in the Nomadia Field Service Management subscription, replaces that detour with a conversation: the question, the figures, the action, while the client is still on the line.

What is natural-language field operations management?
It is the ability to query your field activity (delays, service commitments, workload, client accounts) with a written or spoken question, and get a numerical answer computed on today's data. Unlike a chatbot, each figure comes from the application's own computation, within the user's access rights: it is never 'made up' by the AI model.
The BI dashboards nobody opens
Every operations team has dashboards. How many managers actually open them each day? The figures date from last night, the day's question is never quite in there, and every ad hoc request becomes an extract to ask IT for. The real steering happens over the phone, in other words, blind.
Ask the question, get the figures
"How many jobs are past the contractual deadline, and what do the penalties amount to?" The visual summary arrives within seconds, computed on today's data, not yesterday's extract. A status check that used to take 45 minutes of extracting and formatting is settled in one minute, without opening the application.
Times observed in real-world use, given as a guide and dependent on how operations are run.
Key concept: The figure comes from computation, not the model
An agent that "generates" a KPI produces an unverifiable estimate. An agent that calls the application's functions returns an exact, traceable, reproducible result. That is the condition for steering operations, and for standing behind a figure in front of a client or a board.
From insight to action, in the same conversation
The answer is not a dead end: the manager asks for replanning, the engine recomputes under the same 200+ business constraints, the manager confirms. The overdue backlog is handled the same way: the agent lists what is late and proposes a catch-up sequence ready to approve, cutting the 90-minute review down to about ten. And when a technician calls in sick at 7 am, the reallocation of their day is proposed in 5 minutes, with certifications and proximity respected.
Every answer comes from computation, not the model
An architectural point that changes everything for trust: the agent does not "generate" any figures. It calls authorised functions of the application, within the user's access rights, and returns the computed result. You can steer your operations with it precisely because you can rely on it.
Use cases by industry
Anywhere a delay costs more than the question:
- Multi-technical maintenance: contractual SLAs are monitored continuously; penalties are anticipated rather than discovered after the fact.
- Facility management and cleaning services: the backlog can be read by site and by client, ahead of the monthly review, not during it.
- Energy and utilities: on-call duty and emergencies tracked in real time, with immediate trade-offs when demand spikes.
- HVAC: the seasonal peak is steered day by day, and reinforcements are decided on data.
- Multi-site services: the national picture can be queried in one question, without waiting for the consolidated extract.
How to evaluate an operations management assistant
Four questions that make all the difference:
- Do the figures come from the application's computation, or from the model's generation?
- Is the data queried today's data, or yesterday's extract?
- Can the action (replanning, assignment) be triggered from within the conversation?
- Are each user's access rights respected in the answers?
An SLA cannot be recovered at the monthly close; it is held on the very day it slips. Giving the manager the answer the moment the question arises, and the lever to act within the same conversation, moves operations management from after the fact to ahead of it. It is something managers already do, done better: which is why Smart Control is included in the solution.
Bring the three questions you ask every Monday morning: we'll answer them live.
